Independent multi-disciplinary organisation The Bowel Interest Group is organising a national webinar on Bowel Independence Day (10th July 2019) to communicate clinical best practice and recommended pathways on the taboo issue of bowel dysfunction.
The webinar will be led by leading practitioners Dr Anton Emmanuel (Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery) and Dr Benjamin Disney (Consultant Gastroenterologist, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust), and will cover key subject areas: -
• The impact of constipation on the NHS
• Real life stories of patient impact
• Updated knowledge on the cost of constipation
• Information on best practice care pathway
Bowel Independence Day raises awareness of bowel issues such as chronic constipation and faecal incontinence, and the need to improve access to treatments. To mark the Bowel Independence Day, the Bowel Interest Group will be launching the Cost of Constipation 2019 report - a document which highlights the devastating impact of poorly managed bowel conditions on patients’ quality of life, along with the sheer cost and strain on precious resources within the NHS.
Poor bowel health and chronic constipation is debilitating for hundreds of thousands of people in the UK. In 2017/18, it cost the NHS £162 million in constipation treatment, of which £71 million was caused by unplanned, avoidable emergency admissions and £91 million in prescription laxative spending. The Cost of Constipation Report 2019 updates current insights on the subject and looks at the impact constipation has on people’s lives and the NHS.
Clinical and care professionals interested in taking part in the webinar are encouraged to pre-register by visiting https://bowelinterestgroup.co.uk/bid/#webinar . Registrants will be kept up to date with webinar agenda details, broadcast timings, results and follow-up documentation.
