A step change in point-of-care urine testing

Arab Health2019– the largest medical trade fair in the Middle East–saw the launch of an array of cutting-edge technologies from the UK,including the world’s only closed system for digital point-of-care urine testing.

Developed by British company Clinical Design, the technology was showcased for the first time at the exhibition, which has been dubbed the ‘world’s most hygienic digital urine test’. The Clinical Services Journal speaks to CEO and founder, Oliver Blackwell, to find out more.

Based in Cornwall, Clinical Design researches, develops and produces medical devices to address global healthcare issues. Working intensively alongside clinicians, the company seeks to improve care, efficacy and performance through technological innovation and intelligent design. Oliver Blackwell, an Industrial designer, shared some insight into the human-centred design approach he uses.

“In essence, human-centred design means analysing a problem from many different angles and developing a product that is simple, easy-to-use and that will improve or solve the problem,” Oliver said. “Using this approach meant that I spent hundreds of hours in clinical environments to develop Urine Testing System. Working closely alongside clinicians, we challenged the inefficiencies and methods people had come to accept – we scrutinised every aspect of urinalysis and asked a lot of questions.
