Antiseptic gel reduces the discomfort of catheterisation

CLINIMED will be highlighting Instillagel – a sterile anaesthetic, antiseptic lubricating gel in a single-use syringe delivery system.

The 6 ml and 11 ml size syringes are designed to alleviate pain and discomfort during catheterisation in male and female patients. Catheterisation is an invasive procedure that carries complications of infection, pain, urethral trauma, bleeding and inflammation.

The anaesthetic activity in Instillagel is provided by 2% lidocaine while the antiseptic action is provided by chlorhexidine and the bacteriostatic esters methyl and propyl 4 – hydroxybenzoates. It is important that the urethra is not only filled with gel, but that the gel adheres to the mucosal wall. This Instillagel does remarkably well. As such, catheters and other instruments pass easily through the urethra with minimal risk of causing injury. Now in its twentieth year, over thirty million Instillagel syringes have been used in the UK.
