Celebrating 50 years of ERCP

Last month Aquilant partnered with the Royal Stoke University Hospital to deliver the annual ERCP and EUS Symposium. Celebrating of 50 years of ERCP, the two-day event provided formal presentations, panel discussions and international live cases.

Taking place at the Stoke-on-Trent Moat House on 13th-14th September, this symposium is of the not to be missed educational events in the ERCP calendar and was attended by over 100 ERCP specialists.

The symposium brought together key leaders in endoscopy, gastroenterology and hepatology. With a specialist faculty from Royal Stoke University Hospital and other expert UK centres plus the renowned international experts: Dr Nageshwar Reddy and Prof Alessandro Redici, the event provided a unique opportunity for full audience discussions around a wide range of current ERCP and EUS-related topics, including cholecystectomy, updates in cholangioscopy, stone disease and biliary drainage.

The live cases - presented by teams from the Royal Stoke University Hospital, the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad, the Humanitas Hospital in Milan - were an opportunity to discuss clinical techniques using the very latest specialist equipment such as the brand-new Fujifilm duodenoscope ED-580T.

Dr Srisha Hebbar, course director and consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, explained the benefits of delivering this event: ‘’This is a very unique course, as it is aimed at such a select audience who carry out the ERCP procedure. Running over two days, the first day is kept as a ‘bread and butter’ ERCP course and the live cases and discussions include topics which every attendee would recognise on a day to day basis. The second day is more of an ‘aspirations day’, in that it links to cases from different international centres and covers techniques which delegates might not yet perform but they can aspire to.

‘’ERCP is a very complicated procedure, and that’s the reason I think there is a growing demand for the courses that we deliver.’’

With a nurses’ ERCP and EUS training workshop running alongside the event, Carole Lyth, unit manager, Stoke Nurse Faculty, commented: ‘’This is a really important educational programme. ERCP is a team event, so it is vital that the nurses and endoscopists work alongside each other to deliver the best quality care, and the best experience to patients.

‘’We’re seeing a real increase in the amount of endoscopy required now, which means recruitment is really important. If we provide educational training programmes, then the nurses will hopefully be more attracted to endoscopy, feeling more confident in the work that they do, and gaining increased satisfaction. And, in turn, patient satisfaction will improve.’’
