Could the use of RFID save the day?

The usage of RFID in Trusts is on the increase, primarily due to its flexibility. Whether used for tracking beds, instruments or people, its versatility means that potential applications are almost unlimited.

RFID technology has been used for more than 50 years. The total RFID market is growing year-on-year and predicted to rise to $13.2 billion by 2020. Today, the cost of manufacturing RFID tags has fallen to the point where certain types can be used as a disposable inventory or control device.

Adopting advanced tracking solutions in hospitals provides better visibility of critical hospital equipment and leads to better operational efficiency. This, in turn, can have a positive effect on patient safety.

Nevertheless, initial adoption of RFID technology in medical facilities was plagued with challenges – not least the budgetary constraints endured by UK Trusts.
