Taking control of asthma in the patient’s home

A new diagnostic FeNO breath test, which is the subject of new NICE guidelines, could support diagnosis and monitoring of asthma from the comfort of a patient’s home.

Asthma UK estimates that more than 4.5 million people in England are currently receiving treatment for asthma. Asthma is difficult to diagnose as it is a variable condition which means that a patient could go to their GP and feel well but the night before they could have had severe symptoms. As there is no single gold standard diagnostic, clinicians need a series of tests to diagnose asthma.

Most treatment is delivered in primary care by GPs and nurses and having national guidance is important to help them so that people with symptoms have the best treatment and care.

Now the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has stated in its new guidance that tests to help diagnose asthma could help people take control of their asthma condition.
