Investing in quality observations

Nursing staff at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are using specialist monitors to enhance the quality of observations, to spend more time actively interacting with patients, and to help deliver the best nursing possible. Here, the staff share their experiences direct from the wards.

When Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust came to review its ageing fleet of vital signs monitors, it wanted a technology that would do far more, that would enable new ways of working, and help nursing staff to deliver better care when carrying out crucial observations from the patient’s bedside. 

The Trust had already invested in IT designed to improve patient safety, including an electronic observations system known as Patientrack, that allowed a move away from paper when capturing vital signs and calculating early warning scores. 

More than just replacing the hospital’s vital signs monitors like for like, Derby Teaching Hospitals set out to take digitisation of vital signs to the next level, issuing a requirement for wireless devices that would communicate directly with existing IT systems.
