Future Hospitals: saving time and cost

The Future Hospital Programme was set up to change and improve services for patients, but what have we learned from the initiative? A new report from the Royal College of Physicians provides an insight into some of the successful models of patient care.

The Future Hospital Programme, developed from the Future Hospital Commission (September 2013), was established with the aim of implementing the vision of improving care for medical patients by bringing medical specialist care closer to the patient wherever they are, in hospital or in the community. The work has been underpinned by 11 principles of patient care around which healthcare services should be designed: 

At the heart of the Programme has been the need to change and improve services for patients. 

The final report of the Royal College of Physicians’ Future Hospital Programme (FHP) has shown that implementing the principles of Future Hospital: Caring for medical patientscan deliver not only improved patient care and experience, but also cost, time and resource savings. Other benefits included staff retention, better morale and team-working, and improvements in training and learning.
