Transforming maternity services in England

Jacque Gerrard, Royal College of Midwives director for England, discusses the transformation of maternity services and why it’s important to keep making improvements in this area.

The National Maternity Review publication Better Births was born in May 2016.1 The key message from the review is that maternity services in England must transform to ensure that birth is safer, more woman centred and that women have a positive birth experience.

There were a number of reasons this review was needed such as variation in quality across maternity care, limited access to all four choices of place of birth for women and the need to reduce stillbirths, neonatal deaths and neonatal brain injuries.

The maternity review team was chaired by Baroness Cumberlege. She led a very eminent team of stakeholders and service users through the review. Its aim was to support providers and commissioners of maternity services and work towards improving health outcomes for mothers and babies.
