Dr Craig Buckley, head of research and collaborations at Siemens Healthineers, discusses how MRI and artificial intelligence (AI) may change the future of radiology together.
Artificial intelligence, often referred to simply as ‘AI’, has been a hot topic in radiology for a few years now, and with good reason. The sheer volume of images generated, and the structured way in which these are subsequently organised, makes radiology an ideal testing ground and arena for the development of AI. This is why several organisations have spent much of this decade developing AI systems that can read, interpret and analyse radiological images.
The development of AI in many applications, including medicine, has gathered momentum recently and leading figures from medical and computer science are speculating on the extent to which it might ultimately transform medicine in general, and radiology in particular, in the not-too-distant future.
In this article I will look at the past and potential future of AI in medicine, and the importance of AI’s relationship with radiological imaging systems
