NPSA announces new chief executive

The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) has appointed Martin Fletcher as its new chief executive. Martin Fletcher joins from the World Health Organization (WHO), where he had been based in Geneva.

Martin Fletcher has been working in healthcare for 20 years, including his three year spell at WHO where he was patient safety lead, World Alliance for Patient Safety. He has managed an extensive portfolio of global initiatives on patient safety, including the development of an International Patient Safety Classification.

Lord Naren Patel, chair of the NPSA said: “I am delighted that Martin Fletcher is joining the NPSA as our new chief executive.

He brings extensive experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and working with a wide range of stakeholders. He joins us at a time when the importance of improving patient safety in the NHS is gaining momentum. I am confident he will bring a fresh and dynamic leadership to the role.”

In accepting the appointment, Martin Fletcher said: “I am honoured to be appointed as chief executive of the NPSA. Safety First sets out a bold and exciting agenda for patient safety in the NHS.

I look forward to leading the organisation at this time of great opportunity, to strengthen the place of patient safety at the heart of the NHS.”
