Easy, Low Cost, UN3373 Compliant Packaging of Biological Samples

SpeciSafe® from Alpha Laboratories is the convenient secondary packaging solution that’s ideal for all types of clinical specimens.

With strict regulations applying to the transportation of biological samples such as blood, urine and faeces, all specimens need to be transported in UN3373 compliant packaging.

This requires both the primary receptacle(s) and secondary packaging to be leak proof and either of these to be certified as capable of withstanding, without leakage, an internal pressure of 95 kPa (0.95 bar). If multiple fragile primary receptacles are placed in a single secondary packaging, they must either be individually wrapped or separated to prevent contact between them. Absorbent material must be placed between the primary receptacle(s) and the secondary packaging. This absorbent material must be sufficient to absorb the entire contents of the primary receptacle(s).

Achieving these requirements using standard packaging materials can be time consuming and expensive, often resulting in a large package which can be costly to transport.

SpeciSafe®, from Alpha Laboratories Ltd (Eastleigh, Hants, UK) is a single piece pack, that when used with 95kPa primary containers, fulfils all the requirements of UN3373. It provides a safe, convenient, economical and compliant transport solution for Category B samples.

A super absorbent lining is internally bonded to the single piece shock-resistant container. This efficient SpeciSafe lining soaks up any fluid from leaking vials in seconds. It is so absorbent that 1m2 retains as much as 20 litres of liquid. Once the lining has absorbed its maximum volume, it creates a watertight barrier and effectively seals the SpeciSafe pack, eliminating the risk of any leakage from the secondary container.

SpeciSafe is so easy and quick to use. Simply insert your 95kPa containers, press to seal and place the whole pack directly in a padded envelope or bag, ready for posting or courier collection. One side of the pack is made of clear plastic to enable visibility of sample details without unpacking and to provide visible spillage indication to protect the user.

SpeciSafe packs are available in a range of designs to fit perfectly around commonly used 95 kPa sample vessels, such as various blood vials, serum vials, Universal containers and swab tubes. They include packs for single or several containers, with a design that also satisfies the necessity to separate multiple vials.
