The challenges of laparoscopic surgery

This article examines the challenges of keyhole surgery and how the role of new technology is helping to make the procedure safer.

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, is one of the key areas of innovation for surgeons and patients. 

It has evolved to become an expert discipline within surgery with a set of specialist skills and technologies enabling it to be delivered. 

The procedure allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. The surgeon uses a laparoscope, a small tube that has a light source and a camera,which relays images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis to a television monitor.
