Rogue breast surgeon Ian Paterson has been jailed for 15 years at Nottingham Crown Court after carrying out a series of unnecessary cancer operations.
The 59-year-old, from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, was convicted over operations on nine women and one man.
A BBC report states that he was found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent and three of unlawful wounding, after his trial.
Jurors at Nottingham Crown Court heard last month Paterson had exaggerated or invented the risk of cancer.
The NHS has paid almost £10m in compensation to his victims, while more than 600 private patients will pursue civil action against him later this year.
President of the Royal College of Surgeons, Clare Marx, said: “No sentence, even as long as 15 years in prison, can ever fully reflect the pain and suffering experienced by the victims of Ian Paterson. No hyperbole can be strong enough to condemn the wretched actions he undertook.
“Ian Paterson was a rogue surgeon, and a liar, who ultimately cheated his patients out of the care they needed. Simply put he is a disgrace to the medical profession. He was potentially more motivated by financial gain than any desire to help the lives of others. It is unbelievable that he continues to show no remorse.”
Charlie Massey, chief executive and registrar of the General Medical Council, said: “The crimes which Ian Paterson has been convicted of were deeply shocking acts that betrayed patients’ trust. It is absolutely right that questions are asked about how this happened and more crucially how the health system can prevent it from happening again.”
