Reducing endoscope repair costs

A medical engineering company, which maintains and repairs over 130,000 medical devices around the country, is calling on NHS Trusts to take a different approach to endoscope maintenance, in order to reduce the need for repairs and, ultimately, costs

Avensys UK was set up ten years ago by ex MoD Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Rob Strange and Steve Holt, with the objective of bringing the benefits of the military’s approach to medical equipment repair, maintenance and training to the NHS and private sector. The company now trains hundreds of NHS medical engineers every year, as well as looking after the maintenance of all types of medical devices in hospitals and the community.

After building experience of maintaining and repairing medical devices, including endoscopes, and seeing the impact that training can have on the frequency of faults, Avensys is launching a new combined maintenance and training service for all brands, models and ages of endoscope, which it says will significantly reduce costs, while maintaining high standards of repair.

Managing director, Rob Strange, commented: “Flexible endoscopes are fairly fragile, and we estimate that around 25% that come in for repair have become faulty due to improper care and use. Over the past 10 years, Avensys has seen how close collaboration with our clients and training academy within the biomedical engineering field, has reduced such faults dramatically and therefore costs. We believe that there is a huge opportunity for NHS Trusts to reduce the money they spend on endoscope repair and maintenance contracts.”
