3D printing opportunities for medical technology

Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data – usually layer upon layer – as opposed to the more traditional subtractive manufacturing techniques which sees an object being cut from a solid mass of material.

Alongside the automotive and aerospace industries, the medical industry is currently one of the fastest growing sectors for AM. In 2012, medical applications accounted for 16.4% of the total system-related revenue for the AM market and, according to US-based technology consultants, Wohlers Associates, by 2019, the global market for 3D-printed medical devices is expected to exceed $965 million.1
