3D printing opportunities for medical technology

CSJ looks at some of the exciting innovation taking place in the application of 3D printing for the medical sector.

The Clinical Services Journal looks at additive manufacturing technology developments in the medical sector.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data – usually layer upon layer – as opposed to the more traditional subtractive manufacturing techniques which sees an object being cut from a solid mass of material.

Alongside the automotive and aerospace industries, the medical industry is currently one of the fastest growing sectors for AM. In 2012, medical applications accounted for 16.4% of the total system-related revenue for the AM market and, according to US-based technology consultants, Wohlers Associates, by 2019, the global market for 3D-printed medical devices is expected to exceed $965 million.1
