The Clinical Services Journal reports on some of the presentations discussed at the recent ECCMID event – including the latest research findings relating to antimicrobial resistance, and the healthcare challenges posed by increasing rates of migration.
This year’s European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) took place in Amsterdam in April. The annual event is organised by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) to bring together clinical microbiology and infectious disease specialists to discuss the latest innovations and improvements in biosciences, microbiology, medical, pathology, health care, clinical research and infectious diseases.
One of the educational workshops brought together a compendium of strategies to tackle healthcare-associated infections. As part of this session Eveelina Tacconelli, a professor of infectious diseases at the University Hospital Tübingen and medical director of the Comprehensive Infectious Disease Centre Tübingen, in Germany, presented the findings of a meta-analysis of the clinical effectiveness of antimicrobial stewardship in reducing antibiotic resistance rate.
