Standardising aseptic technique with ANTT

Aseptic technique has dropped off the agenda, yet infection strategies – such as Aseptic Non-Touch Technique – will have a vital role to play in the wake of growing antibiotic resistance.

Clinical experts at a recent conference warned that aseptic technique has ‘dropped off the agenda’ – yet infection prevention strategies, such as Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT®), have a vital role to play in the wake of growing antibiotic resistance.

Ineffective standards of aseptic technique are a significant cause of healthcareacquired infection. The Association for Safe Aseptic Practice oversees the on-going development and dissemination of Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT), a standardised approach to aseptic practice that has been shown to support the reduction of healthcare-acquired infection.

Originated in the 1990s by Stephen Rowley (now the clinical director of the Association for Safe Aseptic Practice, a non-profit, non-governmental organisation),ANTT has become the de factostandard aseptic technique in the UK and Australia, and is now used in over 25 countries.
