An innovative device has been developed which offers pain relief using radiofrequency energy, with the aim of reducing the need for heavy reliance on medication.
With orthopaedic surgery on the increase and the NHS under pressure to keep patients moving through the system without compromising on treatment and care, the arrival of a new device capable of improving both pre- and post-operative results and potentially decreasing patients’ stay is welcome news. DARREN LEE and DR DEEPAK KOTAK report on the latest trials.
Due to the UK’s ageing population, obesity and changes in lifestyle, more people are living with chronic conditions than ever before. Musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain and osteoarthritis now affect more than 10 million adults across the country1 and account for more than 30 million working days being lost due to sickness absence each year.2
As a result, the number of referrals for orthopaedic surgery is increasing by between 7% and 8% every year. Total knee replacement numbers are on the rise, predicted to increase by 200% in the next 10 years3, placing more pressure on the health service to innovate and find cost-effective ways to improve the surgical recovery time for patients.
