An insight into the latest research on respiratory health and disease, highlighted at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society.
The 25th International Congress of the European Respiratory Society recently took place in Amsterdam, providing an insight into the latest research on respiratory health and disease.
Statistics recently released by the European Union have drawn attention to the number of people dying as a result of lung conditions. According to the latest figures, published by Eurostat, 671,920 people died of lung conditions in 2012 – 13% of all deaths during that year. Of the total number of deaths related to lung conditions, lung cancer was the most prominent cause of death, accounting for 40% of cases. This was followed by bronchitis and other chronic lower respiratory diseases (24%) and pneumonia (19%).
The statistics also show that men (398,355 deaths) were more affected than women (273,600 deaths) and that the UK had the highest share of lung diseaserelated deaths (20.3%). These figures highlight lung conditions as one of Europe’s – and, indeed, the world’s – biggest health concerns.1
