Reducing risk of hypothermia

Maintaining patient normothermia is a critical part of many surgical procedures. Even mild hypothermia (when the patient’s core temperature drops below 36˚C) can increase post-anaesthesia recovery time, blood loss and morbid cardiac outcomes and lengthen hospital stays.

Using warmed irrigation fluid is a key element in maintaining patient normothermia. NICE guidelines state that all irrigation fluids used intraoperatively should be warmed in a thermostatically controlled cabinet to a temperature of 38-40˚C. But what happens once the fluids are taken from the cabinet? Often at the point of use the temperature is estimated using just the dip of a finger.

The IntraTemp Fluid Warming System from ECOLAB solves this problem. It provides immediate access to warm irrigation fluid at a visible and controlled temperature, increasing patient safety and reducing the risk of hypothermia.
