Many hospital sterilisation facilities struggle to meet the stringent standards set by the Department of Health for the reprocessing of surgical instruments, which has led many to consider outsourcing this service.
This was the situation facing the Sterile Services Department (SSD) at Benenden Hospital. An ageing air conditioning system in the original unit eventually failed to meet the demanding standards set by the Trust which resulted in a need to segregate the autoclave from the pack room. This solution, although not ideal, worked well for a number of years and kept the department running effectively.
