UK radiology services continue to come under pressure and, in recent months, various reports have outlined key areas where there is a need for improvement – from access to paediatric expertise to interventional radiology.
A number of reports have identified key areas for improvement in the delivery of radiology services in the UK. The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has highlighted a chronic shortage of radiologists in the UK, with only around 48 trained radiologists per million population – compared to 92 in Germany, 112 in Spain and 130 in France.1 There is also a shortfall of around 200 consultant interventional radiologists in England, while access to paediatric radiology expertise also requires improvement.1
Waiting times The RCR’s report, Unreported X-rays, CT and MRI scans: results of a snapshot survey of English NHS Trusts,2 offers an insight into how long patients are waiting for their results and reveals the pressures that radiology services are currently facing.
