St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has optimised the use of monitoring technology to provide an early warning of patient deterioration. The project highlights the importance of collaboration between clinical engineering, procurement, clinicians, IT departments and suppliers in driving improvements in patient care.
At a recent Completing the Picture educational symposium, for clinical engineering and procurement specialists, the St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust recently highlighted a project aimed at ‘keeping the nurse at the bedside’ and improving patient safety, while meeting its objectives towards going ‘paperless’ by 2018, through better use of technology.
With nearly 8,500 dedicated staff caring for patients around the clock, the Trust is the largest healthcare provider in Southwest London – serving a population of 3.5 million. It is a major trauma centre, treating around 170 cases per month, and the Trust’s main site, St George’s Hospital, is one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals.
Using technology to free time to care has been a key aspect of the Trust’s commitment to delivering improved outcomes and efficiency; and, as part of its objective, the Trust has implemented electronic recording of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS).
