In a bid to tackle the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance, a new report has outlined the action needed to stimulate drug development in the field of new antibiotic therapies.
In March 2013, England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, published an annual report highlighting the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infectious diseases. In the report she warned: “If we don’t act now, routine operations like hip replacements or organ transplants could become deadly because of the risk of infection.”
She added: “Governments and organisations across the world, including the World Health Organization and G8, need to take this seriously. This is not just about government action. We need to encourage more innovation in the development of antibiotics – over the past two decades there has been a discovery void around antibiotics, meaning diseases have evolved faster than the drugs to treat them.”1
