The UK Sepsis Trust’s ‘Sepsis Unplugged’ conference recently took place at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham (21-22 May 2015). The Clinical Services Journal provides an insight into some of the highlights.
The idea for this conference first began on New Year’s Day 2015, due to continued pressure to the Secretary of State for Health from The UK Sepsis Trust supported by the Royal Colleges and specialist societies, announcing a suite of measures aimed at improving the outcomes derived from sepsis. These measures include conducting audit in primary care, heightened professional and public awareness, and national commissioning levers to drive change in acute Trusts. These are the first steps towards developing a cross-system response to this most challenging and deadly condition.
Claiming more lives than breast cancer, bowel cancer and prostate cancer combined, sepsis has been described as the hidden killer. For every one of the 37,000 people who die annually in the UK from sepsis two more survive, often facing months or years of rehabilitation. With reliable recognition and rapid delivery of the most basic elements of care, at least 12,500 more lives can be saved and the burden of morbidity reduced substantially for survivors.
