At the Institute of Decontamination Sciences annual conference, held in Blackpool, endoscope decontamination was high on the agenda. LOUISE FRAMPTON reports.
Highlighting the changes facing decontamination professionals today, the annual conference of The Institute of Decontamination Sciences (IDSc) adopted the theme: ‘Are you ready for new challenges?’A wide range of issues were covered by the programme – from ‘the CQC’s new approach to inspection’, ‘The dental dilemma’ and ‘Working within a cross-function team’, to ‘Demystifying JAG accreditation standards for endoscopy’, and ‘Health services apprenticeships and IDSc integration’.
Endoscopy
Following the publication of the latest guidance on Decontamination of Equipment for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (2014), from the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), the IDSc programme reflected the current focus on driving improvement in endoscope decontamination, highlighting the importance of audit and training. Sessions on ‘operational endoscopy’ included a presentation by Dr Helen Griffiths, BSG decontamination lead, on the theme ‘Machines vs Manpower’, which discussed the role of human factors within the sterile services department, the need for more validated courses for sterile services staff, and other key issues.
