When KARL STORZ was successful in its bid to refit two integrated theatres at Colchester General Hospital, the team had only nine days to work on each theatre. In just over a fortnight, the hospital had two new OR1 NEO integrated theatres, featuring state-of-the-art technology for minimally invasive surgery.
A key element in the hospital’s choice of the OR1 NEO was its new modular imaging platform, IMAGE 1 SPIES (Storz Professional Image Enhancement System). SPIES is a modular endoscopic imaging system that can be tailored to specific requirements and offers innovative image enhancements. The surgeon is said to be able to differentiate anatomy more clearly and patient outcomes are reported to be improved.
The new OR1 NEO theatres also feature ambient green lighting to create an optimal operating environment, touchscreens in the sterile field allowing central control of all devices and full HD capture and archiving systems. Links to the ICENI Centre (the hospital’s purpose-built centre for research and education in the field of minimally invasive surgery, a joint venture with Anglia Ruskin University) have also been enhanced, and both theatres can easily be upgraded in the future for 3D technology, ensuring the hospital continues to stay at the forefront of innovation.
