At the recent Infection Prevention annual conference, held in Glasgow, Scotland, efforts to reduce surgical site infection were high on the agenda. KATE WOODHEAD, RGN DMS reports.
At Infection Prevention 2014, Jennie Wilson, Reader, healthcare epidemiology, University of West London, and Rose Gallagher, nurse advisor, infection prevention and control, Royal College of Nursing, provided an insight into a quality improvement initiative aimed at reducing the risk of surgical site infection (SSI).
A collaboration between a number of professional organisations, brought together by 3M, OneTogether is described as ‘a global movement by people passionate about reducing SSI’. The programme is founded on the idea that powerful results can be achieved through small and persistent action and has been designed to ‘amplify individual actions’ – engaging a network of professionals working towards improving outcomes for patients.
The first meeting took place in the US in 2011, which was later followed by the first UK meeting in November 2013. Representatives from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP), Infection Prevention Society (IPS) and College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP) joined 3M for an exploratory meeting to shape the way forward. At this meeting, the professional organisations determined that their first joint actions would be to: “Drive implementation of standards for infection control practice within perioperative practice”. The panel discussed critical factors impacting their respective professions, found common ground and they are due to meet again in November 2014.
