Biomedical engineering: greater recognition vital

The Clinical Services Journal reports on the findings of a recent report from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, which offers an overview of biomedical engineering in the UK, and looks at the increasing role of technology and biomedical engineers in the NHS.

Biomedical engineering embraces devices for use at all stages of our lives and its growth is being driven by many familiar global trends – a growing and ageing world population, expanding healthcare coverage in emerging markets such as China and India, and an increasing public expectation of fitness and health well into old age.

The biomedical engineering sector is growing faster than any sector in the life sciences, and sales are soon expected to exceed those of the pharmaceutical industry.

Engineering developments are helping to reduce costs and improve the performance of healthcare technology. New ways of sensing, measuring and manipulation on a micro and nano scale, for example, can reduce the invasiveness of interventions.
