Issues with latex allergy

According to CARDINAL HEALTH, the planning and implementation of an effective latex allergy risk management strategy can be daunting. Effective risk management requires a “consistent commitment” of time, resource and funding.

Moreover, the company says that addressing latex sensitisation and latex allergy through a risk management approach is not enough. Recommended is a “risk avoidance” approach.

Eliminating the risk of possible latex sensitisation and potential latex allergic reactions, to include anaphylaxis, can only be achieved by the use of latex-free products.

Many UK hospitals have made progress to minimise the use of latex products in favour of synthetic alternatives, but most continue to use latex surgical gloves.

Until recently the quality of synthetic surgical gloves has not matched that of latex. This has now changed with the introduction of synthetic Polyisoprene surgical gloves, which are now available through Cardinal Health.
