KATE WOODHEAD RGN DMS is a past chairman of NATN. She offers her personal memories of the Association for Perioperative Practice in its 50th year and takes an opportunity to congratulate all those who have held posts – both paid and voluntary – and who have helped to ensure that the Association continues to move forward.
I remember being told by the volunteer librarian, Flo Kinnear, that some of the original visits to London by train, made by members of the board, were funded by swapping collections of coupons that had been cut from the back of washing powder boxes. It has been a hard and long road at times!
I have to declare a vested interest in the organisation and will therefore allow myself to muse a little. I served for two years as the vice chairman and three years as the voluntary chairman of the organisation – from 1996-1998 and 1998-2001. At the time it was called the National Association of Theatre Nurses (NATN). In 2005, the name was changed to the Association of Perioperative Practice (AfPP), to allow the organisation be a great deal more inclusive. The organisation then further developed into a charity and today it continues to support its members with educational offerings in a variety of different media and events.
