A new website that provides information for parents and carers about kidney conditions in babies, children and young people has been introduced. Funded by the British Kidney Patient Association and created jointly by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the British Association for Paediatric Nephrology.
The web site www.infoKID.org.uk – holds information on over 45 different conditions, causes, treatment and their management. The resource is aimed at parents and carers of babies, children and adolescents with kidney conditions. It is designed to offer a reference tool where parents can learn more about their child’s condition, before or following official diagnosis.
The site provides information on kidney conditions that affect children, including how a condition is diagnosed, the symptoms, possible complications, treatment options and how it could affect a child in the future. It also includes detailed information about tests needed to diagnose or find out more about a kidney condition and detailed information about treatments used to support children with kidney conditions.
Dr Jan Dudley, consultant paediatric nephrologist at Bristol Children’s Hospital and member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, led the project. She said: “For families, the period following a child’s diagnosis can often be overwhelming as there is a lot of information to digest and currently, it is difficult to find clear and accessible information about these kinds of complex conditions. InfoKid contains high quality and reliable information, giving ‘peace of mind’ to thousands of children and their families kliving with kidney conditions.”
