The 6th annual Reducing HCAIs conference and exhibition – Improving processes, improving outcomes – focused on the challenges being faced within the clinical setting, and how reductions of surgical site infections (SSI) can be achieved.

December 2012 saw the publication of Surveillance of Surgical Site Infections in NHS hospitals in England 2011/2012, summarising the data on surgical site infections (SSIs) collected by NHS hospitals and independent sector NHS Treatment Centres in England between April 2004 and March 2012. Improving processes, improving outcomes examined the results from the report and discussed how the incidence rates for SSIs could be reduced further – through understanding, training and technological advances in both equipment and pharmaceuticals.
Setting the scene for the plenary session, Julie Storr highlighted the challenges of ensuring compliance with best practice. President of the Infection Prevention Society and consultant in global infection control, K-S Healthcare Consulting, Julie Storr pointed out that there is still wide variation between hospitals, in terms of the rates of infection, as well as discrepancy and variation in surgical site infection surveillance.
