Selecting the right detergent for your decontamination process is crucial to ensuring that surgical instruments are not damaged and that cleaning is effective, yet it is an area that is not always well understood. At a Getinge Academy seminar, held at the Holiday Inn, London Elstree, Wayne Spencer, an independent consultant on decontamination and healthcare engineering issues, set out to address this issue by delivering a presentation on ‘understanding detergents and how to choose’.
He explained that there is a misconception that stainless steel and plastics are flat surfaces. In fact, inspection under a microscope reveals that there are complex patterns on the surfaces of instrumentation and endoscopes, making the removal of soiling a challenge.
