Government announces patient safety plans

The Government has announced plans to make the NHS ‘more open, more accountable and more focused on safety and compassion’. Among the changes include the publication of hospital staffing levels, the roll out of ‘patient safety champions’ and a new criminal offence for willful neglect.

Following an investigation into failings at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, the Government has issued a full response to Robert Francis QC’s inquiry, which previously identified key lessons to be learned to improve the quality and safety of patient care. In his report (published in February 2013), Robert Francis QC outlined 290 recommendations designed to create a ‘patient-centred culture’ across the NHS. To recap, these included:
