Transforming patient transport

In September 2013, Stryker took its next step in transforming patient transport with the launch of the Prime TC Transport Chair. Often the first thing a patient sees when they arrive at the hospital – and which carries them through their journey until they are discharged – a seated transport chair can either help or hinder the hospital experience for the patient and their family and carers.

The Prime TC has been designed to convey cleanliness, health and an enhanced level of care. The company has worked with world renowned architect and designer, Michael Graves, on the development project. Paralysed from the chest down by a sudden illness, Michael Graves has a first-hand perspective on the functionality and aesthetics that are lacking in standard hospital wheelchairs. With this partnership Stryker and the Michael Graves Design Group have matched patient perspective to innovation and design to help improve the patient and caregiver journey.

The Prime TC, as with all products introduced by Stryker, addresses potential ergonomic challenges when designing its patient handling solutions and the first step is always to actively consult with end-users during the planning and design stage. The Prime TC chair underwent customer preference testing with Stryker’s UK Advisory Board comprising of leading manual handling, theatre, nursing and back care advisors from UK hospitals.

This guidance along with the collaboration with the Michael Graves Design Group has led to the development a transport chair that is designed to create a welcoming and safe environment. BackSmart ergonomics have been incorporated to reduce the bending and reaching associated with care giver injury. A rigid frame helps enhance durability while reducing the risk of theft.
