African challenges immense

Can we even begin to imagine what that might mean both politically and for healthcare facilities if the same situation was to occur here?

The hospital I was visiting was in desperate need of investment and there was a dearth of consumables and staff resources to support the patients. The matron told me that they always had more patients than beds and currently had over 100 children on the 60-bed paediatric ward.

On the female surgical ward, I was shocked to see two adults sharing a bed, but at least they had sheets. I have visited hospitals in other parts of East Africa, especially rural hospitals, where patients have been lying on beds without mattresses and others where there are no sheets.
