Nearly three in ten people think the problems in Mid Staffordshire are widespread across the NHS, according to an Ipsos MORI poll.
Some 23% believe that most hospitals in the NHS have problems like Mid Staffordshire, while 5% think every hospital has these problems, while less than 1% believes that the problems in Mid Staffordshire were a one-off. There also appears to be a perception that there is a ‘listening deficit’ in the NHS. Ipsos MORI asked people to prioritise areas for NHS improvement, drawing on, among other things, some of the issues identified in the Francis report. While 40% said the NHS should be better at listening to patients, 36% said it should be better at listening to staff too. The findings suggest that despite years of actively surveying patients about their experiences, there is still considerable room for improvement if the NHS wants patients to feel their voices are being heard.
