Targeting rehabilitation medicine

Neurological rehabilitation services at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust are benefitting from the accuracy offered by ultrasound needle guidance using SONOSITE’s M-Turbo hand-carried ultrasound system.

Dr Fayez Morcos, a consultant in rehabilitation medicine at the Trust, explained: “We provide in-patient neurological rehabilitation for a wide range of conditions, from acute problems such as head injuries and strokes to long-term degenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis, as well as providing outpatient and community services. Treatment of spasticity using localised injection of Botulinum toxin is an important part of this service, and accuracy of needle placement is crucial to achieve the required effect, whether that is to improve motor function or simply to make the patient more comfortable. “The resolution and ease of use of the M-Turbo instrument are ideal for needle guidance applications, and the image capture function also makes it excellent for teaching. Patients appreciate the improved speed and comfort of ultrasound guided injections, and being able to visualise the muscles helps them to understand the treatment goals.”
