Safe removal of blades

With over 400,000 occupational injuries reported each year, the EU Council Directive 2010/32/EU aims to achieve the safest possible environment for healthcare workers through the prevention from sharps related injuries.

It is not best practice to remove a blade with either the use of one’s hands or fingers. SWANN-MORTON offer a number of safety related devices within their range to assist with the safe removal, handling and disposal of blades. The Sterile Single-use Blade Remover can be used to remove the blade at the point of operation. It encapsulates the contaminated sharp which remains visible for the post operative count and can then be disposed of in an appropriate sharps container. The Retractable Scalpels can enhance existing safe passing protocols and can assist in reducing potential sharps handling related injuries in such areas as GP practice, trauma, paramedics and the A&E department where sharps handling is less frequent and the working environment less structured than the OR itself. The range has recently being extended to include blades sizes 20,21,22,23 and 24 in response to market demand.
