In a time when the NHS is encouraged to save up to £20 billion by 2014, efficiency, reform and accountability are of paramount importance, gaining unprecedented attention across the sector. The need for organisations to deliver more for less has never been greater. The real challenge, however, lies in how those who manage public services can ensure that significant savings and efficiencies are secured, without impacting frontline services. Cutting staffing costs, increasing day surgery and reducing emergency admissions are examples of potential costcutting areas recently cited by the Audit Commission. Short-term fixes certainly help achieve quick results; however, to help secure the Government’s target level of cost savings, there must be a sustainable reduction in expenditure in the long-term. The healthcare sector needs to adopt a strategic approach.
