The brand new product from Limbs & Things has been designed to meet the specific requirements for the training components of needle decompression and thorocentesis within the ATLS course.
Medical staff working in environments including emergency, critical/intensive care, trauma, and surgery, all require good knowledge and training in a number of techniques such as needle decompression (tension pneumothorax), thorocentesis, crycothyroidotomy, diagnostic peritoneal lavage, and pericardiocentesis. Indeed the ATLS course designed by the American College of Surgeons covers all of these procedures, and is now widely accepted as the standard of care for initial assessment and treatment in A&E departments & trauma centres worldwide.
The product, complete with interchangeable modules, allows for a variety of chest drain insertion techniques to be performed including ultrasound-guided techniques.
The product has been well received, and extensively tested in the UK, used on a number of emergency medicine and critical care courses up and down the country.
Skills that can be practised on this training product are the following:
• Needle decompression of tension pneumothorax
• Ultrasound-guided chest drain insertion (Seldinger-type), including insertion of needle under direct vision, and ultrasonic recognition of chest structures
• Open, or cut-down chest drain insertion: recognition of correct position, (including respiratory swing) surgical incision, blunt dissection through chest wall, perforation of pleura, and finger sweep
• Suture of tube to chest wall
The product will be available in the market towards the end of this year. For more information about the product, or to register your interest please click here
