This year’s congress will focus on the impact of economic and political influences on the perioperative environment and how practitioners can manage that change whilst still maintaining patient care and safety.
The day will start with an opening session from keynote speaker, Dr Jean White, the Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, who will inform you of the impact of government reform of the NHS and the perioperative environment and how you as practitioners will be key in maintaining effective patient care and the importance of good leadership in taking this forward.
The shift of patient care moving closer to home will mean that patients being cared for in the acute hospital setting will be those who carry a higher risk of complications. The second main session will help prepare you for this and keynote speaker Ian Martin, Clinical Co-ordinator, NCEPOD will cover the NCEPOD (December 2011) report “Knowing the Risk – A review of the perioperative care of surgical patients" highlighting the four main areas which practitioners need to address to reduce the risk to these patients.
The third session will be led by keynote speaker Professor Hilary Humphreys, RCS NI part of the eminent team responsible for the paper, "Guidelines on the facilities required for minor surgical procedures and minimal access interventions", a study of the circumstances in which surgical procedures can be undertaken outside of the traditional theatre environment. He will discuss how the changes in the NHS will lead to a growing number of procedures being undertaken in primary care facilities, and assess the training and environmental requirements necessary for patient safety to remain uncompromised.
The final session of the day will be looking at the impact of the implementation of a successful change in practice in enhancing patient care and improving patient safety and experience through the National introduction of the Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP). A team of successful practitioners will share their experiences of introducing the ERP and how this could be rolled out in your Trust. The session will also be shared with Neil Betteridge, who is the Patient and Public Advisor for the Enhanced Recovery Partnership (ERP) and he will share the patient experiences of the introduction of the ERP.
